Depression

Depression is mood disorder that may include feeling sad, anxious, irritable, hopeless, and losing interest in activities once found pleasurable. Medication is often used to treat depression, but many people do not respond fully to medication alone.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry in October of 2011 looked at elderly patients with depression who were partially responding to a typical antidepressant medication. When researchers added QiGong Videos to their treatment, patients showed:

A greater reduction of depressive symptoms
Improvement in physical functioning
Improvement in cognitive tests
A decline in inflammation throughout the body
Numerous studies have shown that any sort of exercise has a positive impact on mood. Qi Gong as a gentle exercise, with its emphasis on deep breathing and a meditative state of mind, makes it an ideal treatment for mood disorders.

QiGong Videos practice helps reduce the symptoms of depression and hypertension.

Hypertension

Hypertension is a medical condition where the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated, requiring the heart to work harder to pump blood throughout the body. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke, heart failure, aneurysms, kidney disease, and an overall shortened life expectancy.

There have been numerous studies into whether Qi Gong is beneficial in treating high blood pressure; a recent review of 26 such medical studies found 85% of them to have been successful in reducing blood pressure.

One study in particular, published in 2003 in the Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine, look at the effects of QiGong Videos on individuals with blood pressure at the high-normal or stage 1 hypertension level. They found Qi Gong:

Significantly lowered blood pressure
Reduced cholesterol levels
Lowered anxiety levels
In addition to dietary changes, medication, and other treatments generally recommended by physicians, Qi Gong could be used as an excellent complementary treatment for high blood pressure.
